Another excellent year for members in our Record of the Month Club.
We ended 2023 with William Eggleston’s beautiful LP of solo piano works, 512, and a few lucky ROTM Club members received signed copies of the record.
We kicked off 2024 with an easy-going jazz standard from Sun Ra, Celestial Love, originally released in 1984.
February was Hi Tide Groove–a collection of soul staples from Memphis from 1969-1981.
Spring time brought us one of our favorite new releases of the year. In March, we picked Rosali’s Bight Down, released on Merge Records. As a bonus, Rosali signed and doodled on all of our copies!
April was a busy month in Oxford with the Double Decker Arts Fest AND Record Store Day. We selected a lost Ole Miss psych classic, The Gordian Knot, originally released in the 1960’s and lovingly reissued by Sundazed.
Early summer was time for Soft Summer Breezes–a collection of soft psychedelia from Numero Group.
June was highlighted with Like Flies on Sherbert, Alex Chilton’s ramshackle and rocking solo album from 1979.
Another one of our favorite new releases of the year came in July with Jake Xerxes Fussell’s When I’m Called, released on Fat Possum Records.
Our first time selecting a record from the excellent International Anthem label out of Chicago came in August. Club Members were treated to the jazz snippets of Tomin’s Flores para Verene.
September came with another excellent new release by NYC-based singer/songwriter, Allegra Krieger.
After a short delay, the October ROTM was by Aboriginal Australian artist Kankawa Nagarra. Her album Wirlmarni is beautiful folk music with heavy North Mississippi hill-country blues influence. Kankawa was recently awarded the Australian Music Price and received $50,000 for her work.
November as full on country with Tina Turner’s debut solo album from 1974, Tina Turns the Country On! As a bonus, ROTM Club members also received a copy of the Southwest Review music issue, which featured some of the best music writing of the year.
We finished the year with a beautiful record of instrumental music by Luther Dickinson. Mississippi Murals is a collaboration between Dickinson and the Walter Anderson Museum of Art on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
2025 is already shaping up to be an amazing year for our ROTM Club. We’ll be announcing January soon. For February, we’ve got MJ Lenderman swinging by the shop to sign copies of his excellent new record, Manning Fireworks. In March… well, you’ll just have to wait and see 😉
Thanks for growing your record collection with us and stay tuned for more good stuff in the new year.
